Taking inspiration from my family’s experience of being affected by stalinist repressions, I reflect on how personal and collective histories continue to influence the present and the ways we understand ourselves and others. A recurring theme in my work is confrontation with the judging gaze - both others’ and our own - following by the persistent feeling of being watched and isolated at the same time. I explore themes related to perceptions of power,
time and the ways memory is shaped and distorted. How do we deal with our past and our present? Rather than representing historical events directly, I am interested in their afterlife: the ways their traces are shaping perception, human connection, and the experience of being present in the world.
